Off-roading has been around in one form or another for many years, but the constant advances in vehicle technology, safety gear, off road performance parts, and accessories makes it an always evolving world that can be very easy to find yourself lost in. The term off-roading is obviously a pretty broad one, because what it entails is different for everybody. Whether you’re simply jetting around your own property on a dirt bike for fun, or touring some famous backcountry trails with your friends, there is a lot to understand before turning on the engine. Between all of the different types of off-road vehicles, the most important safety gear and accessories, and some specially curated tips and tricks just for you, we’ve got all the info that you need to get off-road ASAP!
Getting Started with Off Road Vehicles & Accessories
Getting started with off-road vehicles can be a challenging, but rewarding endeavor. Learning about which accessories you need to have, the laws you need to follow, and even just picking the right type of vehicle for your specific needs can be downright intimidating, but we are here to help! Fortunately, the off-road community is an extremely welcoming community, so don’t hesitate to ask for advice! The seasoned off-road veterans of the world were beginners at one point in time too, and the mistakes they have made and learned from over the years mean that the foundation of knowledge you have to learn from is a solid one.
Before we get into the types of off-road vehicles and where to use each one, there is an important distinction to make. What kind of off-roading do you want to do? There is not really a limit to the “types” of off-roading people can enjoy as there are many very specialized facets of the sport, but as this is an introduction, we will just discuss the most common ones.
Light trails are probably the most common places you will find yourself when you leave the pavement, and can simply be rough or unpaved roads. This is definitely your best bet when getting your off-road bearings, because it’s generally the most accessible type of off-roading available!
Overland and Camping off-roading have been getting more and more popular as time goes on, likely due to the availability of much more capable vehicles. Overlanding basically just means driving through remote areas over a longer period of time. This isn’t just a day trip, but rather a weekend, or even week long adventure for you and your family/friends. Overlanding can be as hard or easy as you like; it’s all based on where you want to go, and the route you choose!
Mudding, or MUDDIN’ as some folks call it, is exactly what it sounds like… You rip through huge puddles of mud in your rig and make the biggest mess humanly possible. There are also more specialized facets of mudding that involve racing, or simply making it through thick mud, but as a rule, this is just a good time for the boys and girls of the off-road community.
Rock crawling is an extremely specialized form of off-roading, and also more dangerous than some of the previously mentioned types. Again, it is what it sounds like, in that your primary goal is to traverse very uneven rocks. Rock crawling is not for the faint of heart, and requires a lot of specialized gear. Be sure to talk to an experienced rock crawler before you hit the trail.
Sand/Beach driving is a great way to get out with the family and enjoy the majesty of nature and everything she has to offer. Whether you decide to hit a beach, a desert, or a sand dune park, you’ll want to make sure your vehicle is ready to take on the sand. You don’t want to get stuck because you’re unprepared!
With all of these types of off-roading now racing around in your head, the next question to answer is what type of vehicle do you need?
Types of Off Road Vehicles
When shopping for a new off-road vehicle for yourself or your family, there are many things to consider. Like we discussed above, you have to take into consideration where you plan on driving or riding your vehicle. You will not want to take the same vehicle rock crawling that you would take overland camping, for example. If you intend to bring family along on your journey, you probably don’t want a dirt bike! It’s clear that the type of vehicle you choose is important, but now you’re probably thinking to yourself, “how many different types of off-road vehicle are there?!” Don’t worry, it’s really pretty simple when it comes down to it.
Let’s start with some easy examples of vehicles you can use off-road that you see on the road every day! 4-wheel drive trucks and SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles) are just about everywhere we look. Many of these vehicles are set up to be used on the road only, but with a few tweaks they can be off-road ready in no time. If you are looking for fun on the beach, light trail driving, or even some light overland driving, but don’t plan on taking your off-roading much further, these would probably be the best fit for you. You can go on adventures with the whole family, but you can still get to work in your vehicle!
OHVs, or Off-Highway Vehicles, are a different breed entirely. These include a huge range of vehicles, and follow an entirely different set of rules. The only difference between OHVs and trucks/SUVs is that they are designed for off-road use only, and use on the highway isn’t only dangerous, but in most cases illegal.
ATVs (All-Terrain Vehicles) are by definition “off-road motorized vehicles having three or four low-pressure tires, a straddle seat for the operator, and handlebars for steering control.” These vehicles can be used in an almost infinite number of ways, including but not limited to transportation around a large property, trail riding, sand/beach riding, and so much more. These are great entry level OHVs for anybody, and can bring hours of fun and adventure almost anywhere you take them.
ROVs (Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles) are OHVs with four or more wheels with bench or bucket seating meant for more than one person. These vehicles are laid out much more like a normal road vehicle with a steering wheel, brake pedals, and seatbelts. With rollover protection and enough room for the whole family, these vehicles are great for camping trips, mountain riding, or really any kind of riding you are interested in.
UTVs (Utility Task Vehicles) are the same as ROVs, but designed as utility vehicles rather than recreational ones, and their top speed is limited to 30mph.
Dirt Bikes are one of the most popular off-road vehicles available today. Available in both gas-powered and electric models, it is up to the rider which one they choose. Able to scream around some of the most exciting trails in the world, these vehicles are built for adventure.
Specialized Vehicles are much more terrain-dependent and use-specific. These include but aren’t limited to sand rails, dune buggies, rock crawlers (usually modified jeeps), snowmobiles, amphibious vehicles, and more.
What Are the Main Differences between Off Road and All Terrain Vehicles?
Off-road and all-terrain vehicles have a lot in common with each other, especially when we are talking about the terrain they can both conquer. There are however a few glaring and important differences to note before you buy. Off-road vehicles are typically 4x4 style vehicles built using automotive manufacturing techniques, and are generally bigger and able to be driven on or off of paved surfaces. These vehicles are usually characterized by large tires with deep treads, flexible suspension, and the ability to carry multiple passengers and cargo across many types of terrain. Off-road vehicles tend to have a high ground clearance, low range gearboxes, open differentials, and the ability to very easily move across just about any terrain you could imagine.
ATVs are actually off-road vehicles themselves, making them just one sub-division of off-road vehicles, but there are some important distinctions that separate ATVs from other types of off-road vehicles. ATVs are generally a much smaller type of vehicle, and often built using the same techniques as motorcycles and dirt bikes. They are usually three or four wheeled and use low pressure tires to prevent sinking into soft ground. They aren’t street legal in most places, especially in the USA and Canada, but once you get off-road they will really shine. These generally use handlebars to steer and have a seat that the rider straddles, and are much less expensive than their larger off-road vehicle counterparts. The great thing about ATVs is that they are designed with age groups in mind, so there are vehicles available for youth riders, young adults, and adults.
Our Favorite Accessories For Off Road Vehicles
So now you’ve got the perfect vehicle (or vehicles) and it’s time to hit the trail, right? WRONG! It’s important to be sure you have all of the proper safety gear, spare parts, and apparel you need to ensure you have a safe and fun time off of the pavement.
First and foremost, safety. If you’re speeding down a trail and hit a bump in the road, the last thing you want is to fall and hit your head. Our favorite helmet is the Fly Racing 2020 Kinetic Thrive Helmet, a durable DOT approved helmet with a removable and washable comfort liner. You’re also going to want to pick up a nice set of knee protectors, and The Alpinestars Adult SX-I V2 Knee Protectors are extremely comfortable and allow maximum mobility due to their dual gear system and thermoformed foam backing. If you plan on pushing the limits while out riding, be sure to pick up a chest protector as well. A hard fall can cause a lot of damage, and the Alpinestars Adult A-10 Full CE Certified Chest Protectorwill do a lot to protect your vital organs and prevent serious injury.
Wearing regular street shoes while riding off-road is a pretty bad idea as well, so a set of Alpinestars Tech 3 Boots are almost a necessity, though there are always other brands to check out if you want to shop around! Gloves and goggles are also always a must when you are riding unpaved roads. The Alpinestars Megawatt Gloves are top-of-the line durable yet comfortable riding gloves. They include silicone on the finger tips to improve grip, and feature a unique polymer hard-knuckle protector for incredible impact and abrasion resistance. As far as goggles go, the Fly Racing Zone Goggles are a premium and sleek choice for any rider. Because of the nature of ATVs and other off-road vehicles, it’s often necessary to carry all of your food, water, and other gear on your person. The Alpinestars Standby Backpack is a simple, yet durable choice. With a compact size of 20 x 13 x 8.5” it is big enough to carry what you need, but small enough to be comfortable.
Aside from safety gear, there are many other accessories you may want or need. Hard riding can lead to broken bodywork, but that’s no problem when you can just purchase new fenders or even handlebars for your vehicle! If you’re riding a dirtbike, it’s always a good idea to carry an extra chain with you if at all possible in the case your chain breaks while out on the trail. Last but not least, when you’re not using your off-road vehicle, covering it up will protect it from the elements until its next adventure. Be sure to check the specifications of any cover you buy to ensure it fits your vehicle!
Accessories for Electric Off Road Vehicles
While most of the accessories you’d use with your electric off-road vehicles are the same as those you’d use for gas-powered vehicles, there’s no need for gas, oil, or any engine tools. You could however use the battery power of your electric ATV or other electric vehicle to power this awesome Boss Audio Powersports Plug and Play Sound System. With a built- in 450 watt amp, this baby can get LOUD. It’s weatherproof speakers and exterior will keep it safe in any environment, and it’s built-in rechargeable battery means the music never has to stop.
You may consider carrying an extra battery with you as well, since it can be tough to charge batteries while you’re out in nature, and getting stuck on the trail could make for a rough trip!
Accessories for Street Legal Off Road Vehicles
One question I’m sure you’re asking yourself is, “How do I get a vehicle that I can’t drive on the road to my destination?” Luckily, with a 4x4 pickup or a Jeep, you can drive both on and off the road effectively. If, however, you want to bring an ATV or a couple of dirt bikes with you, you’ll need a method of loading them into the bed of the truck or onto a trailer! With the Caliber ATV/UTV Ramp Pro HD, you can do just that. At 52” x 90” and with a capacity of 3000 pounds, you can load just about anything up into your truck with this accessory. The center section can be removed to narrow the ramp for loading snowmobiles, dirt bikes, and any other narrow vehicle. It also comes with a lifetime warranty, which means it might one day pay for itself.
Maybe you just want to take the truck for an adventure, and aren’t worried about an ATV or any other vehicle. You’re still going to need gear for that adventure, and to keep it all tied down tight, we suggest the Protaper Swivel Carabiner Tie-Downs. These will keep all of your gear safe and secure, and they boast a beastly 1200lb straight tension strength.
Whether you are tricking out your street legal off-road vehicle, or your ATV, the Rigid Radiance Pod Series Lights will help you to make your vehicle recognizable anywhere, day or night. These will light up the night on your overland camping trip, and they come in white, green, amber, blue, and red.
Small Off Road Vehicles & Accessories for Kids
If you’re camping with the family, you can’t leave the little ones out of the adventure! Luckily there are many different ATVs and other off-road vehicles made just for tots.
For 3 to 6 year olds, we suggest the Costzon Ride-on ATV; a perfect vehicle for the youngest of children maxing out at 2 miles per hour. They can stay safe while feeling just like dad on his big ATV since this bike has the appearance of the real thing.
If you have a kid who is 8 or older but isn’t quite big enough for a real gas-powered ATV yet, the absolute best choice for them is the Razor Dirt Quad. This is probably the most popular of the electric ATVs currently on the market, and it can hit a top speed of 8mph. Not too fast to injure themselves, but fast enough to feel like they’re flying! It looks like the real deal, and even has a twist grip throttle and hand operated brakes, just like the one dad rides.
If your kid is growing up, and ready for a huge step towards a real grown-up ATV, the TaoTao ATV TForce 110cc is the only way to go. Boasting a top speed of 35mph, this ATV isn’t a toy. With a weight limit of 230 pounds and an attached rear cargo rack, your kid can jet around the trails with the whole family while carrying all of their own gear. It really is a great step towards autonomy off-road, and a good learning experience for kids and parents alike.
Don’t forget…Just like you, your child needs to put safety first. Be sure to look into youth versions of all the same protective gear that you wear to ensure your child is just as safe as you are. What they need to wear really depends on the type of vehicle they are riding, the terrain they are riding on, and their age, but anything you wear to protect yourself should be available in youth sizes as well!
