Horsepower vs Torque: What’s the Difference?
Posted by ZM Performance on Jan 11th 2023
If you’re looking for a fast, powerful ride, torque and horsepower are two of the most important terms to pay attention to. We hear these terms thrown around a lot, but what exactly do they mean and how are they different?
Horsepower Vs Torque
Although sometimes used interchangeably, in reality, horsepower and torque are two completely different measurements of your engine capacity. In the sections below, we’ll define and compare horsepower vs torque so that you can use these terms accurately and determine the best type of dirt bike or ATV for your riding style.
What is Torque In An Engine?
Torque is a physical measurement of the twisting force that causes rotation around an axis. With dirt bikes and ATVs, this rotational force is produced by the engine’s crankshaft. Torque is what initially gets you moving. Torque directly affects horsepower, although they measure distinct things.
Low-end torque is the amount of torque at a low number of RPMs. The word “torquey” is often used to describe engines that can accelerate bikes or ATVs strongly at almost any RPM.
What is HP?
Horsepower or HP is a measurement of the amount of power an engine can produce in a certain amount of time. This takes into account both the amount of force applied and the rate at which the force is applied.
HP vs Torque: What’s the Difference?
So, how are horsepower and torque related? Horsepower is determined, in part, by your bike or ATV’s torque. In mathematical terms, horsepower equals torque multiplied by RPM or revolutions per minute.
And how are these two measurements different? Put simply, torque is the power needed to get your dirt bike or ATV moving. It affects your ride’s rate of acceleration. On the other hand, horsepower is the amount of power your ride can produce, which directly correlates to your ride’s top speed and ability to maintain that speed. In other words, torque makes your ride take off quickly and horsepower makes it go fast.
Torque vs Horsepower: Which is More Important?
Although horsepower tends to be a more prominent buzzword, both of these measurements are equally important. That being said, the levels of torque and horsepower to look for in a dirt bike or ATV will depend on your style of riding.
As you can imagine, the ability to maintain speed is of utmost importance when it comes to racing on a motocross track. However, on a more rugged trail, constant speed isn’t as important for your performance as acceleration. Low-end torque helps you keep up momentum when you’re riding on more rough terrain– it keeps you from getting stuck in the mud or sand and helps you climb over obstacles. Torque is also important if you need towing capacity.
